Americas Favorite Punk - Life After Quarantine (2020)

This has a really nice sound, thanks for sharing this! It really stands out stylistically too... some of it is sort of like a country/folk-ish rock sound and others have a more indie rock / emo sounds, but all have the more emo/whiny vocals (sort of ) - like you'd be familiar with if you listen to Tigers Jaw (which is highly recommended)... can't really pigeonhole it I think. But I'm sure that it's going to be worth many many repeated listens!

I'm really liking this sound! A bit like some late-90s alternative rock, but with a bit more experimental/indie style to it also. Some song structures sound a bit repetitive but I'll have to give it more listens to really make up my mind about whether or not that's a bad thing. I like the (usually) understated vocals on it too, though there's a fair variety between the male and female vocals (I think I sort of prefer the male vocals in this band). A lot of the energy seems to be a bit "simmering", but sometimes it comes out pretty strong.

I'm really enjoying the sound on the single here... some strong female vocals, I like the way they crack on the strong crooning parts, with a nice heavily thumping rhythm guitar, bass, and drums to back it all up - sort of a 90s style heavy alternative rock/grunge sound on some songs (though mostly a bit poppier than most grunge, just borrowing some of the sounds if not the arrangements), others have a little blues-y rock sound to them. Nothing sounds too generic though, but really well put together, and there's really quite a lot of stylistic variety on this album (just from listening to snippets of it so far). I'm looking forward to giving it some fuller listens!

This is an excellent new album! This is definitely an emo album too, even though the genre is listed here as "Indie" but it definitely has more of the midwest emo / punk elements, though not too generic at all, definitely has its own take on it all. Really good stuff, and their bandcamp page has their older albums that are also awesome! https://goodlookingfriends.bandcamp.com/ You can also check "Sophie's Floorboard" on blogspot to get more of their stuff for free.

Thanks a lot for this! I've enjoyed their past albums and this is a great one also (a little bit more polished than most their previous efforts - still really good). Solid guitar-heavy midwest emo with some slower parts and some heavy fast parts and typical emo-style vocals (which I really appreciate). If anyone's interested, you can get their first EP on their bandcamp for free: https://charmermusic.bandcamp.com/album/whateverville-2

This is pretty good stuff! Doesn't stand out as exceptionally creative or anything (and honestly I get tired of so much post-hardcore being so generic and formulaic, and honestly just mediocre)... but even with this not necessarily sounding different , it still sounds really great. So they play to the genre, but they do it really well. Thanks for this!

Yeah, I agree... the man's vocals aren't what you'd initially expect for the musical style (though the woman's vocals seem to blend pretty seamlessly)... but I think it's the way the guy's vocals are a bit unexpected that make it work. Because if *his* vocals blended into the sound too much, it'd just be like another post-rock / math-rock record and maybe sort of drone/blend into the background too much... but the way they stick out a bit seems to help give it all definition somehow. Anyway, it's interesting and I'm enjoying it so far.

This has a really interesting sound... there's definitely some jazz to it, but it sounds overall more like "world" music than jazz. The main guy seems to be singing in Arabic with Middle Eastern rhythms and instruments and things more often that what would normally be associated with jazz. In a few of the songs, the jazz (or a more afrobeat) sound does come out stronger though, but never really leaves the "world music" sound behind.

Thanks a lot for this - I'm really enjoying it! I haven't heard the whole album yet, but from what I've heard so far, some songs are definitely much more on the post-rock side of things (but with male & female vocals that add to it well) and others are more on the midwest emo side of things (with the noodly guitars and bit of math rock rhythms). A really nice sound overall that seems to go together really well and I'm really enjoying the listen so far and looking forward to listening to it many more times!

The single has some really good sound, I like the heavy guitars and I really like this musical style, but the vocals on the verses - I just don't like them. It's like the guy is trying too hard to make it a certain style or something but it just doesn't work for me. The vocals on the chorus (a bit heavier and more aggressive) work well enough... but the verse vocals just ruin it for me.

This isn't bad... as others have said, it's punk-heavy emo (rhythms and vocal angst definitely a bit more midwest emo than straightforward punk). As typical in the emo scene, it's obviously a DIY recording and not the worst as far as that goes... but just enough to be offputting, I feel like. There are a lot of better bands with better recordings that I can listen to.
