That feature on Starving To Be Empty is immense, the whole song is really. Love it. Probably my favorite song on the album. Overall this is pretty great. After listening most of the day (thankfully it leaked before I left for work! you guys rock!)... my faves are probably... Drunk, Crooked Soul, Burial Plot, Sleeptalk, The Color Black and Starving To Be Empty. The rest is good, just didn't click with me like these songs did. Not yet at least.

The part about 2 minutes in, that lasts for ~15 seconds? If you were into the rest of the song, I don't feel like it was that big of a deterrent... but that's just me I guess. Maybe some questions are worth asking. ... Pretty interesting. Really like the song 'Let Me Hear' by them, and unfortunately I'm kind of stuck in a rut now where every other song on that album, and every new song I hear, seems to feel like a less interesting version of Let Me Hear. Which doesn't mean the songs are bad, but eh... lol. Might be the language barrier and the fact its all just beautiful, beautiful noise when I can't really extract any unique message/meaning from the song.

I dig this. First listen standouts ... Tragedy, Skin, Play Pretend, Brave. Think 'Skin' may just be my favorite so far. The rest are pretty average but could definitely grow on me. The only song that straight up bothered me was A.N.I.M.O ... but that song kind of highlights the issue with this album. Their lyrics have always been pretty heavy-handed, but they felt personal, genuine and were delivered passionately. Whatever an A.N.I.M.O Story is supposed to be, I don't think it's a very good one. This doesn't feel very personal or genuine, and without Joel's screaming there's only as much passion as they can milk from McGough's voice (and Joel's clean singing to an extent). There are definitely a few gems to pluck from this, but feels like a weak entry for BAAO. Hopefully next album they go back to writing songs that feel a little more vulnerable and try to avoid getting too creative thematically.

Being As An Ocean - Find Our Way [Single] (2019)
Dreakon13 replied to NieR:Automata™'s topic in Singles
Didn't realize another single came out. Got nothing against this really, but I'm biased. Love these guys. Definitely weaker than Play Pretend, probably won't make the cut when I'm picking songs for regular rotation after the album comes out, but I still dig it. Kinda reminds me of how I felt with Know My Name (versus the other, much better, bonus tracks) on the deluxe edition of WFMTC. Not bad, just meh. Alone / Bulletproof > Play Pretend > Know My Name > Find Our Way -
Been listening to this since it came out and having a real difficult time figuring out just how much I like it. At first nothing was really clicking with me, but the more and more I listen, I'm finding that I suddenly like this song, and suddenly start enjoying that song more. It seems like Volbeat albums always have to grow on me a bit... which is odd because they aren't really complicated listens. Problem is none of these songs are great IMO. Volbeat is usually good for one or two songs an album that hit me right away and don't let up... nothing like that here, but I think all but maybe two or three songs are somewhere between good and very good. Which probably makes it a more consistent album than the last few, but lacks the high points. Also, Pelvis On Fire sounds like a bad early demo of Sad Man's Tongue or something. Very different songs but an undeniably similar sound to them.

Victorious, Save Me, Terrify The Dark, Reach, Anchor, Back To Life are all pretty good. Expected two or three solid tracks, and I'm pleasantly surprised. Most songs here are just repeating the same two or three lines ad nauseum, but pretty damn catchy and I'm kind of a sucker for uplifting lyrics lately (though these are even hitting my limits on cheesiness at times). The female vocals definitely save a few of these songs, with that in mind Terrify The Dark needs more love.

Alone/Bulletproof > Play Pretend > Know My Name Been listening to this new song quite a bit the last day or two. Joel's harsh vocals were really grating on WFMTC IMO, no energy to them... I can't say I feel too bad about seeing them go. I can appreciate the way they played against McGough's clean vocals in general though. I'd love to hear the energy from HWBWP come back (not holding my breath) since that's probably my favorite album from these guys... or have a few of these moments sprinkled in at least... but in lieu of that I'll take a song like Play Pretend here that uses both vocalists well (albeit "boring" with no spoken word pacing or barking from Joel) and kind of finds a middle ground between the more energetic side of HWBWP and the ambiance/melodic side of WFMTC. I could see a song like PP hitting the radio waves and helping BAAO blow up a little bigger. It's catchy, it's mostly safe and sounds good, and it's easier to digest than just about anything else they've made. It'd immediately be one of the better songs on the radio, IMO. But I can understand why people don't like that. Hopefully they just played it safer for the lead single.

Periphery - Periphery IV: HAIL STAN (2019)
Dreakon13 replied to Rorschach's topic in Progressive Metal
I've had Reptile, It's Only Smiles, Sentient Glow and Satellites on repeat the last few days. Good stuff. If I like those songs a lot (the more clean vocal/hook heavy catchier stuff)... are there other highlights song-wise in Periphery's discog that sound like them? Wouldn't mind getting some more to listen to but there's a lot of albums/music to sift through from them. -

Bring Me the Horizon - Medicine [Single] (2019)
Dreakon13 replied to BenjaminBurnley's topic in Singles
Not really much of a BMTH fan overall, but TTS had some great songs and I'm really digging this single. As someone who has always leaned towards metal/metalcore/melodic death metal up until the last few years... it kinda seems like these bands shifting in a more poppy alt rock direction are aligning with my own shift in musical taste. These old bones just can't bang like they used to. Who knows, these bands are getting older too... maybe they can't bang like they used to either. But there's still music they want to make. Simple, catchy as hell songs, that sound good and you can sing along with, are just what the doctor ordered. -

If I'm not mistaken, this deluxe edition actually has the original Dissolve single. Since they ended up releasing Waiting for Morning to Come independently, they didn't have the rights to the original so they re-recorded some of it. Must've gotten the rights back at some point, or maybe they expired or something. I've been focusing on the new songs so I dunno if other songs changed, but I'd think Dissolve would be the only different song.
