Talked about this with a friend a few days ago. Narrowed my list over a few days from 19 albums to 10, and AOTY at the bottom. Some initial contenders were Gojira - Magma, Thrice - TBEITBN, stuff like that.

10. M83 - Junk

An impressive outing from the band that redefines them. A spectacle of an album only made better by their live performance.

9. Schoolboy Q - Blank Face LP

Easily the rap album of the year, over contenders like Childish Gambino (who just released a real bummer of a mediocre record) and Kanye West, who's The Life of Pablo is impressive but lacks a lasting memorable impression. Schoolboy does it just the same as before but with new layers.

8. blink-182 - California

Many pop-punk gods stepped back into the fold this year but none were as impressive or explosive as blink. Matt Skiba can be the new Tom DeLonge forever as far as I'm concerned.

7. DNCE - DNCE

The best pop record in the last 5 years with a nice injection of indie flavor. Not a bad tune in the bunch, and they really step out of their own zone past the single "Cake by The Ocean".

6. Infant Annihilator - The Grand Elysian Galeriarch

The most disgusting death metal band with a new vocalist that sounds like a cursed witch of the woods from hell. Beautiful, violent, and relentless.

5. We The Wild - From The Cities We Fled

If post-hardcore and emo are coming back, these guys are leading them. A perfect injection of post-hardcore from 2006 with the heaviness of 2010 metalcore. One of the best bands around right now.

4. Bear's Den - Red Earth & Pouring Rain

Lots of indie bands try to capture that simple and clean 80s vibe and maintain a polished modern sound. Nobody does it quite like this album. Atmospheric, big, and with a song that had me believing Robert Smith wrote the guitar himself, an amazing album that I've been obsessed with all year.

3. Devin Townsend Project - Transcendence

Epic doesn't begin to describe this album. Chock full of huge soaring riffs and the right edge of heaviness, DTP produced one hell of a metal album and my enjoyment of it was only furthered and cemented by seeing some of my fave tunes from it live in October.

2. Real Friends - The Home Inside My Head

One of the frontrunners of the new emo scene, Real Friends found a good foothold with Maybe This Place Is The Same, but hit the mark PERFECTLY on their sophomore effort. Harmonies, catchy chorus' left and right, there's not a single bad tune here and it keeps momentum and emotional posture from start to finish.

1. Metallica - Hardwired to Self Destruct

Few comebacks have ever, EVER, been as impressive as this one. Nobody thought Metallica would ever recapture the pace of their 80s albums with the cleanliness and grit of their later work. But they nailed it here and then some. I found myself enjoying every track and going back for repeated listens just minutes after finishing the record. To say I'm blown away is an understatement. If this is their last record, it's the best send-off I could have asked for. The best resurgence from a band in 20 years.

Voted for Darke Complex, not cause they were my fave, but because they were the SUPER unexpected KL underdog of 2016.

But other than that, to know my faves you'll have to catch my music review site at the beginning of the year XP

Erra's new album is way too incredible for me not to vote for it. Album blew me away. Disappointed that DGD is winning over Architects, that's a damn shame. Architects > high pitched vocals

  3. Green Day - Revolution Radio
  4. Dance Gavin Dance - Mothership
  5. Hands Like Houses - Dissonants
  6. blink-182 - California
  7. Real Friends - The Home Inside My Head
  8. Issues - Headspace
  9. Architects - All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us
  10. Set It Off - Upside Down
  11. Beartooth - Aggressive
  12. Waterparks - Double Down
  13. Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
  14. Panic! At the Disco - Death of a Bachelor
  15. Pierce the Veil - Misadventures
  16. Sunrise Skater Kids - Friendville
  17. Wovenwar - Honor Is Dead
  18. The 1975 - I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it
  19. Periphery - Periphery III: Select Difficulty
  20. Mick Gordon - Doom (Original Game Soundtrack)

Solid year for music as a whole, and seems that 2017 is already planning to deliver.  Here's to a great year of music!

It's a hard choice between TCTT + Dance Gavin Dance, but DGD had just a flawless album.

Yüth Forever because it made me cry.

Dance Gavin Dance will probably win. I actually liked Mothership and thought it was pretty enjoyable, but people on here froth over this band hard!
That being said, 'Betrayed By The Game' is one of my favourite songs of the year.

I'm working on my top 10 albums of the year for a blog I write on. Look a little like this...

10: Young guns - Echoes
9: The Devil Wears Prada - Transit Blues
8: The Amity Affliction - This Could Be Heartache
7: Bury Tomorrow - Earthbound
6: Trophy Eyes - Chemical Miracle
5: Thrice - To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere
4: Trash Boat - Nothing I Write Can Change What You've Been Through
3: Hellions - Opera Oblivia
2: Every Time I Die - Low Teens (the most brilliant album of the year)
1: Hands Like Houses - Dissonants (Just my flat out favourite record of 2016).
