I love Green Day, but this new side project is so boring to the point where the trilogy albums sound like American idiot compared to this.

I don't care what anybody says there were some great tracks on the trilogy albums.

This side project is more straight up rock and roll it seems. I like it.

Why do a side project if it sounds like your original band?

My thoughts are maybe it was more about writing/recoeding music with people other than the two guys he's been composing with for with for 30 years

well both of those bands are Green Day, just under different names. He does have Pinhead Gunpowder though

To add to what previous commenters said, I think it's also just hard for such a distinctive vocalist as Billie Joe Armstrong to sound different because well, it's still him.

Because if this was a Green Day record it would have to go through the label, they would plan a massive tour, promotional cycle, etc. Green Day is a huge brand and with that comes a lot of responsibilities and pressure. Sometimes musicians just want to make music for fun.

THIS. Plus, if you've ever been in multiple bands, you know sometimes it's just fun to play with other people. Even if the end product sounds similar to your other work, different bands with different members have entirely different dynamics.

I'm digging this album. Still hoping for at least one more Pinhead Gunpowder album though.

I mean, listen to this. It's a perfect song:
