I don't have high expectations on this, but I guess there might be a couple of jams

Incredibly disappointing. I thought the reviewers were just being dicks to Robb Flynn but this is such a fucking boring album. Machine Head used to be my favorite band; they changed my life. Hell all through out high school I wore a necklace with their emblem and a pick I had gotten from Adam Duce and Robb Flynn.

It's alright I'm glad they play a set that's 2.5 hours long with stuff from every album otherwise I probably wouldn't  go and see them

The album is OK, really far from being terrible, is kinda of forgettable, but is a fun listen, i think what's dissapoints most ppl is that is nothing alike to their last albuns.

Ps: Triple Beam is TRASH

Now that Ive heard the album in full, I gotta agree with all of the reviews of it. Its pretty bad, theres a decent moment here and there, but for a Machine Head album its pretty disappointing. A few months ago, Rob was praising King 810...it seems like that garbage has rubbed off on his music.

I don't know about everyone else but I can see myself jamming this for the rest of the month without problem.

I love every album from MH,even The Burning Red and Supercharger, for me the best it's the blackening...this album it's different from the rest,it's a good album,i enjoy it.Bad reviews are judging the album getting in mind past albums, with MH you cannot do this, forget the name of the group and only judge the album. The formula used in B&D was over, the band needed a change...there were only few good songs on that album.

Not as bad as everyone makes it up to be. There are 5-6 really strong songs, 5-6 okay songs and a couple of forgettable ones.

Heavy Lies the Crown though, holy fuck!

This is the one song that I really enjoyed. It’s classic Machine Head. My favorite MH song is Imperium. I don’t know if they  will ever write a better song than that, at least in my opinion. And I can respect the fact that they wanted to do something new with this album. It’s just not up to par with classic MH.

Yeah. I am seeing them next month. Only band there. Just them and 2.5 hours of their jams.

Halo is their best song imo, it has the best songwriting and it's incredibly tight. One of my favorite songs of all time.

About Catharsis, well at this point MH is 9 albums deep. They don't have to make every new album a masterpiece. They're doing these 2.5 hours sets, so they just need 4-5 really good new songs and that's it. I don't expect them to make an album as good as The Blackening ever again, and that's the mindset people should have, because you're only getting disappointed otherwise.

Far from stellar or unforgettable, but not disappointing as people say.

I like the way this record is more melodic and groovy compared to older thrashier releases.

So fun album, but nothing above average for machine head standards

In all seriousness, what a fucking worthless album. Had to review this thing early, and my god it was a struggle. There are so many interesting sources of inspiration here, and so many steps outside of the box (a good thing!) - but it's just ALL SO BORING!

Feels like there is 0 creativity whatsoever.

Feels like they tracked some demo riffs, and some demo melodies, looked at each other and went "yeah that's pretty good".

Not even worth a listen.

This is a kind of self tribute revisiting all their eras as a band. Influences from all their backstory and context.

This is not a bad album, this is just different and General Flynn told everyone, do not expect a continuation to The Blackening... this is a call back to 2000's music with touches of all the things thy have learned along the way. It has many influences. I am happy with this as I became attached to MH with songs like Ten Ton Hammer, From This Day and Deafening Silence.

There are nice surprises through out the album. Grind You Down has some gutturals that have not been heard before. The chants in Screaming at the Sun, the similarities to SOAD on Hope Begets Hope. The fasta pacing Razorblade Smile. The heavyness of Volatile, Beyond the Pale, Catharsis and Kaleidoscope. Songs are shorter, except for Heavy Lies The Crown. If you are not into rap metal (or fast singing) this is not for you; as I do like it I am enjoying it. It has some sort of a concept going from start to end and ends on Eulogy that sums up all you've heard.

It is not for eveyone... that's it. MH hinted at a return to this kind of music with Beneath The Silt from Bloodstones & Diamonds. The songs on this album will be total rockers with singalongs and headbanging down-low while played live.

They just had fun and made an album different from what people would expect and they had the warmness to warn everybody about it. So what's the fuzz? I like it. Not the best album of the history obviously but has some great strong songs here...

1. Volatile - Good

2. Catharsis - Good

3. Beyond the Pale - Excellent (One of the sickest riffs I have ever heard)

4. California Bleeding - Good

5. Triple Beam - Excellent (Has some King 810 lyrical awesomeness)

6. Kaleidoscope - Awful

7. Bastards - Awful

8. Hope Begets Hope - Good

9. Screaming at the Sun - Excellent

10. Behind a Mask - Okay (Not bad for a slower song)

11. Heavy Lies the Crown Good (After the first 2 minutes lol)

12. Psychotic - Good

13. Grind You Down - Excellent

14. Razorblade Smile - Okay

15. Eulogy -  Awful

All in all... Not a terrible album. Glad most of the singles were like the worst on the album. I'd give it a 7/10

@Frak The Gods agree with "Triple Beam" being one of the top tracks. its weird but it works. reminds me of Mnemic's "Deathbox" riff

From the tracks I've heard so far:
Volatile's main riff is straight from Chimaira's "Cleansation"

Beyond the Pale takes its riff from Strapping Young Lad's "Love?"

Kaleidoscope has some big Sempiternal (BMTH) influence

Bastards is general folk punk

I truly don't understand why the reviews were so bad for this album. It's not the best album ever of course but actually is quite decent. Some good songs are better than others, it has some REALLY good riffs and vocals. In fact, am I the only one who really enjoyed "Bastards"? lmao.
