So all it really sounds like to me is like it was recorded underwater. The levels are a bit muddy and the screams have this weird crunchy quality to them where it sounds like the levels peaked on the mix. It's borderline demo material.

you make a good point - but it is free after all so i doubt that that was the main idea behind the release

This is not even a different recording from the actual songs OK, right? Just like unmixed or more like... they've tried to dumb down the sound? Like make it intentionally worse. 
I like the idea though, the actual thing is not very impressive though.

I wish that it was like The Chariot's Everything Is Alive ... and recorded all in one take and not mastered or overdubbed. I would have appreciated that. But this is just like releasing a demo.
